Logan

Cassandra is laughing as she enters the school building, her smile flashing at the jock she’s walking beside. Logan narrows his gaze as he chews on his lip. She presents as the average, carefree teen. With a flick of her blonde hair, she disappears through the front door, off to a day of classes, laughing, and excelling.

Except below it all, she’s worried. A tense feeling is gnawing at her, which is why she probably glanced both ways before sashaying through the door.

Because she’s an alien.

Logan takes a sip of his coffee, grimacing. He can’t understand what his dad sees in the stuff, but after spending the night in his car—his new home-away-from-home— watching Cassandra’s house then the wakeup juice is necessary.

Plus, sleep has been elusive since their date. Cassandra is beautiful. Intriguing and funny and sassy. The one person he’s ever felt so drawn to.

And she’s his enemy.

The one his father has been hunting most of his career.

The image of the finger marks singed into the table has never been far from Logan’s mind. He needs to tell his father. They need to bring Cassandra in for questioning.

Slugging down the last mouthful, Logan crushes the cup in his hand, instantly regretting the action. The sounds of its destruction remind him too much of what he needs to do—destroy Cassandra’s life.

Because it won’t stop at the questioning. There will be an arrest. Interrogations that will only intensify if she doesn’t talk. Ultimately, she’ll be Jack Cadbury’s first big break.

And Logan will have to watch it all. He just hopes the knowledge that he’s been a part of saving the world will be enough to alleviate the jagged regret he’ll be carrying for the rest of his life.

And yet, he hasn’t done it. Cassandra’s at school, enjoying another day of freedom.

Making Logan just as much as a traitor as his sister is.

His jaw tightens as he throws the cup onto the pile of trash on the passenger side floor. He hasn’t done it because Cassandra’s not evil. Not like the guy Logan and his dad questioned. That guy had been full of…nothing. Maybe a thin vein of guilt, definitely some low lying anger, but the dominant, blanket emotion was…darkness. Nothingness. There wasn’t the passion and fire that Logan’s sensed in Cassandra. The very same things he’s so drawn to.

His cell rings, snapping him out of the never ending merry-go-round of confusion that he keeps finding himself in. Seeing it’s his father, he quickly answers.

“Hey, Dad.”

“Brielle got away,” his father states flatly.

Logan straightens in his seat. “She ran, too?”

Tristan and Jareth disappeared like the cowards they are. Logan’s hand tightens around his phone. Except Jareth took Veronica with him.

“No,” his father growls. “We brought her in for questioning. She wouldn’t give me a straight answer. The moment it looked like I was about to get somewhere, some asshole lawyer came in and whisked her away.”

“Dammit,” Logan mutters.

A small part of him was hoping they’d get the answers he needed and he wouldn’t be the one to betray Cassandra.
